Melatonin discontinuation completely resolves suspected medication-induced ventricular ectopics in a single patient.
Why the study?
Melatonin is commonly used and considered a safe drug for insomnia, but its role in triggering ventricular arrhythmias was undocumented.
Does stopping melatonin resolve melatonin-induced ventricular ectopics?

Does stopping melatonin resolve melatonin-induced ventricular ectopics?
Melatonin use may induce ventricular ectopics, highlighting the importance of thorough medication history before considering invasive electrophysiological studies.
Idiopathic ventricular arrhythmias are frequently encountered in clinical practices. Melatonin is a frequently used medication for treating insomnia. Melatonin is usually considered a safe option among the drugs used to control insomnia. Here, we report a patient with ventricular ectopics induced by melatonin. The patient’s ventricular ectopics and symptoms disappeared on stopping melatonin. This case illustrates the importance of history taking specifically all medication history in clinching the etiology before proceeding for invasive electrophysiological studies.

Panattil et al. (2023) conducted a case report in Ventricular arrhythmias (n=1). Melatonin vs. Stopping melatonin was evaluated on Ventricular ectopics and symptoms. Melatonin induced ventricular ectopics in a patient, which completely disappeared upon stopping the medication.
