The feasibility of miniaturized enantiomer separation by open tubular liquid chromatography (OTLC) as well as by open tubular electrochromatography (OTEC) in 50 μm i.d. and 25 μm i.d. fused silica capillaries coated with CHIRASIL-DEX, a covalently linked permethyl-β-cyclodextrin to polysiloxane, is demonstrated for a number of chiral pharmaceuticals and chiral alcohols. A comparison of OTLC and OTEC is made. The influence of several organic modifiers and the role of temperature for the enantiomer separation in OTLC and OTEC has been studied. The direct coupling of the OTLC system to an electrospray ionisation mass spectrometer (ESI-MS) without any interfacing is demonstrated. A new example of an unified enantioselective chromatographic approach is presented.
