This Note transcribes and discusses a list of books Karl Marx inserted into one of the notebooks which contain the so-called ‘Economic and Philosophical Manuscripts’ of 1844. It is shown that the list was inserted sometime between 1847 and 1850, and that it neither contains the books Marx used when composing the ‘Economic and Philosophical Manuscripts’ (as has been maintained): nor all the books on economics Marx had read before he made the study of economics his life's work.
