Approaches for estimating the utility of human-animal relationship measures are presented and discussed. Three primary measures of the reliability and validity of assessment instruments, Cronbach alpha, Pearson correlations, and factor analysis, are illustrated with recently developed measures of companion-animal bonding and attitudes toward animals.
