May support nutritional counseling in athletes; leaves open need for prospective trials to confirm CVD benefit.
Athletes are getting bigger and stronger, but in some sports they are getting bigger not only by adding muscle mass, but also fat. During their careers, athletes should seek nutritional counseling to assure that most of their weight gain is muscle not fat. Counseling also should be provided to athletes at the end of their competitive careers to help them effectively change their eating habits and maintain a reasonable exercise program to transition into a healthy weight for life. This will reduce the risks of developing metabolic syndrome, cardiovascular disease, sleep disordered breathing issues, osteoarthritis, and other medical issues that are associated with obesity in athletes and in the general population.
