Development of fluorescent probes with good water -solubility and a wide applicable pH range for highly selective and sensitive detection of hypochlorite in aqueous solution was of great significance and was challenging. A methylthio-substituted coumarin-based fluorescent probe was synthesized and characterized. The probe could be utilized for fluorescence turn-off detection of hypochlorite in acetonitrile/phosphate-buffered saline solution (4 : 6, v/v, 10 mM, pH 7.4). The probe displayed an excellent selectivity over other competitive species and featured a fast response (less than 20 s). It could be used for quantitative determination of hypochlorite concentration within the range of 0–36 μM, and the limit of detection was calculated to be as low as 0.47 μM. The probe was applicable for sensing hypochlorite in a broad pH range of 4–10 and was successfully utilized for the detection of HClO in real water samples.
