  • Utilized AI tool Script Forge to draft Scriptures for Ruth and Jonah.
  • Conducted error analysis on initial drafts to identify necessary changes for community testing.
  • Engaged Bible translation leaders for evaluation of the drafts' usability.
  • Identified multiple errors in AI drafts that align with Script Forge’s warnings.
  • Concluded that extensive corrections are needed to prepare drafts for community feedback.
  • Final assessment suggests drafts can function as preliminary versions for skilled translators.

Abstract

Using artificial intelligence (AI) to draft Scriptures via Scripture Forge offers a new tool for translation teams. Leaders of the Bible translation movement are evaluating whether this is viable for low-resource languages like Apal in Papua New Guinea. This paper details a test of AI drafts for Ruth and Jonah, itemizing changes needed to bring the initial “Draft 0” to a level suitable for community testing. The analysis identified errors consistent with Scripture Forge’s warnings, questioning the tool’s overall usefulness. The study concludes that while Scripture Forge drafts require extensive correction, they can still serve as a functional “Draft 0” for experienced translators.
