Education in Ancient Israel and Its Implications for Educational Development in Nigeria

This paper is a theoretical paper, examining the implications of education in ancient Israel for educational development in the contemporary Nigerian society Education in ancient Israel was highly valued and played a crucial role in the development of their society. The emphasis on their education was based on the study of the Torah, prophets and writings. Parents and the community shared responsibility for educating children. Other areas of their education include oral tradition, storytelling and acquisition of skills through apprenticeship. The study revealed that education involvement, practical skills through apprenticeship and religious education has the implications of educational development in the contemporary Nigeria. Based on the above findings the paper recommends that the Federal Government should review and update the curriculum to ensure that it is relevant to the needs of the country and for Nigerian graduates to acquire the skills and knowledge needed in line with what is obtainable in Israel. Also, there is the need for significant investment in teacher training to deliver quality education to students. Rather than using religious for disunity, all religious bodies should learn from the ancient Israel and use religious education to foster development in Nigeria.
