Analysis shows enhanced harmonic control and output quality in multilevel converters with advanced modulation techniques.
The Power converters innately produce harmonics and circulating currents, which degrade efficiency and power quality. Contemporary multilevel converters, such as Modular Multilevel Converters (MMCs), use staircase waveforms to reduce these effects. But, further advancements require complex modulation and control strategies. This paper analyzes pulse-width modulation (PWM) and control techniques, with emphasis on carrier-based and selective harmonic elimination (SHE) modulation. It reviews their relative simplicity, cost, and performance. This analysis shows that focused techniques, such as multilevel SHE-PWM, which promote thorough harmonic control and loss minimization, while circulating-current controllers effectively suppress internal currents and enhance output quality.
