Intravenously injected labeled cardiac troponin was mainly cleared by the liver (86% of total uptake) and kidneys (12% of total uptake) in rats.
Why the study?
Despite the clinical importance of cardiac-specific troponins as diagnostic biomarkers for suspected myocardial infarction, how cTn is cleared after release from damaged cardiac cells remains unknown.
This preclinical study demonstrates that cardiac troponin is primarily cleared from the circulation by the liver and kidneys, providing a mechanistic basis for stable troponin elevations in patients with impaired organ function.

Rat data implicate hepatic and renal clearance of troponin; hypothesis-generating for mechanisms of persistent elevations in human organ dysfunction.
Muslimović et al. (2020) studied Clearance of cardiac troponin. Intravenous injection of labeled cardiac troponin (cTn) was evaluated on Organ retention and clearance of labeled cTn. Intravenously injected labeled cardiac troponin was mainly cleared by the liver (86% of total uptake) and kidneys (12% of total uptake) in rats.
