Although single‐crystal beta‐ and beta''‐aluminas can be ion‐exchanged by immersion in molten nitrates, polycrystalline membranes of Na‐β'‐Al 2 O 3 fracture on contact with molten KNO 3 . A KCl vapor ion‐exchange process allows synthesis of leaktight potassium‐ion‐conducting β''‐Al 2 O 3 membranes. Material properties, including results of electrical tests with molten potassium electrodes, are reported for a 12.65% K 2 O, 0.7% Li 2 O, 86.65% Al 2 O 3 composition.
