A patient with coarctation of the aorta presented with Adams-Stokes syndrome and complete heart block, with post-mortem examination revealing a calcified bicuspid aortic valve.
Case Report (n=1)
This case report documents a rare presentation of coarctation of the aorta associated with complete heart block, Adams-Stokes syndrome, and a bicuspid calcified aortic valve.
Alerts clinicians to coarctation in unexplained complete heart block; case report leaves open broader associations.
TO OUR knowledge coarctation of the aorta in association with complete heart block and Adams–Stokes syndrome has not previously been reported. The patient in the case reported below was first observed while having attacks of Adams–Stokes syndrome. Examination revealed signs characteristic of coarctation of the aorta. Varying degrees of heart block were manifest and subsequently became complete. Post-mortem examination showed, in addition to coarctation, a calcified bicuspid aortic valve. The cause of the heart block prompted considerable debate prior to death.Review of the LiteratureCoarctation of the aorta has been very thoroughly discussed in its clinical and pathological aspects. . . .
