Within the 1976 population of New York state nursing homes, proprietary nursing homes were found to have lower costs than not-for-profit and government homes. This difference transcends facility size and resident mix, as well as quality. The measure of quality used by federal and local governments to monitor homes, and used in this study, may be inadequate, however, to assess the psychosocial quality aspects of environments.
