Equations are set up for consecutive reactions in an idealized soil column and solved for concentrations of metabolites as functions of time and depth within the column under steady state conditions. The reactions NH + 4 → NO ‐ 2 → NO ‐ 3 were so expressed for columns with maximum numbers of nitrifying organisms. These equations for an open system can be modified to accommodate rates of metabolism for reperfusion experiments for the condition of maximum enrichment of nitrifiers.
