Aspirin 100 mg daily is recommended for cardiovascular prevention in high-risk hypertensive patients, provided blood pressure is stabilized to < 150/90 mmHg.
Why the study?
Does aspirin 100 mg daily prevent thrombotic complications such as myocardial infarction and ischemic stroke in high risk hypertensive patients?
Does aspirin 100 mg daily prevent thrombotic complications such as myocardial infarction and ischemic stroke in high risk hypertensive patients?
Aspirin 100 mg daily is recommended for cardiovascular prevention in high-risk hypertensive patients after achieving blood pressure control.
Hypertension and atherosclerosis are associated with a prothrombotic or hypercoagulable state, as evident by abnormalities of haemostasis, platelets and endothelial function. Therefore, in high risk hypertensive patients, use of antiplatelet agent might be beneficial in preventing thrombotic complication such as myocardial infarction and ischemic stroke. Aspirin 100 mg daily is recommended for hypertensive patients who have one of the following categories: secondary prevention ± cardiovascular complications, primary prevention having one of risk factors such as age > 50 years + target organ damage, a 10-year CHD risk > 15%, or type II diabetes mellitus. However, it should kept in mind that aspirin treatment be initiated after stabilization of blood pressure < 150/90 mmHg. (Korean J Med 2013;85:15-21)
