Dementia is a chronic, progressive disease, frequently present years before diagnosis. The rate and degree of progression varies depending on the individual. Key symptoms are global impairments in memory functioning and cognition. Regardless of the age of onset or rate of progression, treatment involves medical intervention, family support and education, and environmental modifications. This literature review outlines ways in which the individual's environment can be utilized to enhance independence and self-esteem. Safety, work simplification, and environmental adaptations are discussed.
