In her novel Beauty (1981), an adaptation based on several classic fairy tales, Sheri S. Tepper, uses the character of Beauty as the linking factor between these pretexts. From the very start Beauty appears as being characterized by a mind-body split, which will bring about the distinct course of her development and maturation. The influence of Plato's view of the split between body and soul as well as between male and female also marks Tepper's narration. My approach is also centered on the ecological debate, on the split between reason and imagination, light and darkness, on the author seen as mind and the body seen as text.
