Mechanical right atrium distension of the isolated rat heart increased heart rate and heart rate variability, and decreased the time delay of excitation propagation in the left ventricle by 1.9 times.
Why the study?

Mechanical distension of the right atrium in isolated rat hearts increases heart rate, heart rate variability, and excitation wave propagation velocity in the left ventricle, suggesting intracardiac mechano-induced regulation mechanisms.
The aim of the study was to assess the effect of mechanical right atrium distension of the isolated rat heart on the heart rate and heart rate variability, and the velocity of excitation wave propagation in the left ventricular myocardium using multielectrode mapping with flexible arrays. Materials and Methods. Experimental studies have been performed on the isolated rat heart in compliance with the Langendorff technique. Electrical heart activity was recorded using a flexible multielectrode array system.

Kharkovskaia et al. (2018) studied Isolated rat heart (n=20). Mechanical right atrium distension vs. Normal perfusion conditions was evaluated on Time delay of excitation record between array electrodes in the left ventricular myocardium (decreased by 1.9±0.3 times). Mechanical right atrium distension of the isolated rat heart increased heart rate and heart rate variability, and decreased the time delay of excitation propagation in the left ventricle by 1.9 times.
