Hypertriglyceridemia linked to ~4.2-fold higher odds of mild hypertensive retinopathy.
Why the study?
Does hypertriglyceridemia increase the risk of mild hypertensive retinopathy in an isolated American Indian population?

This study is the first to demonstrate an independently predictive relationship between hypertriglyceridemia and mild hypertensive retinopathy in an American Indian population, suggesting a unique paradigm of microvascular risk.
Hypertriglyceridemia may flag retinopathy risk in this population; hypothesis-generating and requires longitudinal confirmation before any practice change.
= .05) within the Goshute population. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to demonstrate the prevalence of hypertensive retinopathy in a Native American population. Moreover, our study is the first to demonstrate an independently predictive relationship between hypertriglyceridemia and hypertensive retinopathy in an American Indian population. This study furthers our knowledge about prevalent blinding eye disease within the most geographically isolated federally recognized native United States American tribe, for which nothing has been published with respect to any disease. Although, this study furthers our understanding about the prevalence of genetic epidemiological risk factors within this population, it has greater implications for the screening of blinding diseases in underserved populations in general. This study can inform public health on planning and delivering of quality, accessible and relevant care to this population.

Hicks et al. (2019) conducted a cross-sectional in Hypertensive Retinopathy (n=64). Hypertriglyceridemia (Poor Triglycerides) vs. Normal triglycerides was evaluated on Mild hypertensive retinopathy (OR 4.228, 95% CI 0.998-17.912, p=0.050). Hypertriglyceridemia was an independent predictor of mild hypertensive retinopathy in the American Indian population (OR 4.228).
