When the chloride's away…︁ A heparin sensor that increases in fluorescence intensity by 320 % upon heparin association has been designed by using a novel chloride-dependent mechanism. This increase is due to the displacement of the quenching chloride ions from the local environment of the halide-sensitive quinolinium fluorophore.
