This study determined the relative effectiveness of three different data collection methods for conducting needs assessments and concurrently assessed the professional development needs of human resource development employees in a large metropolitan area. A survey using only closed‐ended items, an open‐ended item questionnaire survey, and focus group interviews were used to understand HRD practitioners' training needs, incentives for participating in professional development activities, preferred scheduling options, and reasons that limit professional development. A combined approach using a closed‐ended survey with focus group interviews resulted in a needs assessment method that was both effective and efficient.
