The development and validation of an anglicized version of Kohn's (1972) Authoritarianism–Rebellion Scale is described. It proved adequately reliable and related predictably to the following: Conservatism; Ethnocentrism; Intolerance of Ambiguity; Dogmatism; membership in each of four political groups; and demographic information on political preference, religious preference and religious attendance. Principal components analysis yielded five rotated factors interpreted as sociopolitical rebelliousness, general right‐wing authoritarianism, authoritarian submission, a prepolitical authoritarian‐rebellious dimension and ethnocentrism. Several pertinent analyses failed to support the hypothesis of an ‘authoritarianism of the left’.
