The author examines, at the microlevel of analysis, the structural sources of strain and coping patterns younger, dual‐career families are likely to experience. This is followed by a discussion of aging spouses in dual‐career families. It is argued that spouses in dual‐career families will encounter problems in meshing their retirement plans and that sociologists need to explore this problem area since the number of dual‐career families is expected to increase dramatically in the next 15–20 years. The author's objectives are twofold: 1) to bring attention to the void in the literature on aging spouses in dual‐career families, and 2) to suggest hypotheses for research.
