Abstract An approximate treatment of the volume effect in coiling molecules is suggested. It is based upon the assumption that the probability of finding the end of a chain element at a given point at distance A from the preceding chain element is determined by the average density at this point. From the results obtained an estimate of the volume effect in certain polymers is derived.
