Abstract The field of research and practice that is generally incorporated under the rubric of "health communication" is currently dominated by social psychological models of behavior and theoretical perspectives informed by the stimulus–response school of communication. This article argues that the field needs to incorporate critical cultural and political theory into its scholarly inquiry and informed practice to a greater extent than it currently does.
