The place of the newer penicillins in the treatment of any other infections thani staphylococcal is more doubtful. Penicillin G exceeds all other penicillins in activity against all other bacteria (except two uncommon species of Proteus), the differences being often wide. The nearest approach to the activity of penicillin G against important pathogenic organisms such as haemolytic streptococci and pneumococci is that of penicillin V, which may therefore reasonably claim to retain its place in the oral treatment of sufficiently sensitive infections.
