Summary Four studies using both opposite and same-sex dyads were conducted to examine the relationship between sex and willingness to volunteer to be a subject in an experiment. The degree of contact between the experimenter and subject was varied. In three of the four studies, a significant interaction effect was found, with subjects helping experimenters of the opposite sex more often than members of their own sex. No evidence supporting an ingratiation interpretation was found.
