The purpose of this study was to determine if the granules observed in frozen sections of exposed human cementum with the light microscope can be detected with the electron microscope. Electron‐microscopic examination of decalcified exposed roots revealed the presence of vacuole‐like formations deep in the cementum. The vacuoles frequently followed morphologic patterns of collagen fibrils in the cementum and underlying dentin. Both the granules and vacuoles (1) have a similar distribution, (2) are in the same size range, (3) have the same basic shape, and (4) are found in the same specimens.
