THE functional assessment of myocardial performance includes a measurement of cardiac output. Such precise diagnostic information is particularly valuable in patients with cardiac disease who are undergoing catheterization or open-heart surgery. In the intensive-care unit, a major goal of treatment for the critically ill is frequently the improvement of myocardial function. Serial determinations of cardiac output in these circumstances can be valuable adjuncts in guiding fluid and drug therapy.Information on cardiac output has not been available for routine clinical use, principally because measurement technics have been difficult and time consuming.
