Experimental measurements of the low field d.c. conduction in both polycrystalline and single crystal yttria-stabilized zirconia are presented. Comparison shows that conduction in the single crystal material is little different from the polycrystalline counterpart. Results were obtained on a range of polycrystalline samples having yttria molar compositions between 5 and 20%, across the zirconia rich cubic fluorite phase boundary, and the conductivity shown to decrease with increasing penetration into the single phase field. This behaviour is discussed in terms of association of vacancies with cationic defects, and it is suggested that a concentration dependence on the activation energy for vacancy motion is not inconsistent with experimental observation.
