Combining repulsive and attractive couplings achieves adequate gain for amplitude death in Van der Pol oscillators.
Why the study?
Amplitude death has received less attention than synchronization and anti-synchronization in coupled non-linear systems, despite being a useful technique for suppressing unwanted oscillations.
The study demonstrates how combining repulsive and attractive couplings can achieve amplitude death in two coupled Van der Pol oscillators.
May advance coupled-oscillator models in cardiac electrophysiology; leaves open experimental validation.
In the study of coupled non-linear oscillators' dynamic behavior, amplitude death is an important phenomenon. It displays both oscillation suppression and amplitude. Generally speaking, amplitude death is an issue that has received somewhat less attention from academics than synchronization and anti-synchronization, which are likewise results of linked non-linear systems. In many systems, amplitude death is a useful technique for suppressing unwanted oscillations. Combining the repulsive and attractive couplings will result in the amplitude death. In the current study, we use Lyapunov stability analysis to compute adequate coupling gain for amplitude death in a system of two Van der Pol oscillators. Through numerical simulations, the result is verified.

Joshi et al. (2023) studied Coupled non-linear oscillators. Repulsive and attractive couplings was evaluated on Amplitude death. Combining repulsive and attractive couplings achieved adequate coupling gain for amplitude death in a system of two Van der Pol oscillators, as verified by Lyapunov stability analysis and simulations.
