This article discusses the geographycurriculum in response to the current epoch.Epoch-typical issues include economic andenvironmental justice associated with climatechange. The circumstances we describe areexacerbated, we suggest, by the broader social, cultural and political contexts and divisions stokedby post-truth politics and social media. We arguethat this age of crisis calls for a positive, coherentand principled educational response such as thatexemplified by the capabilities approach to schoolgeography. In recent years, conceptual andpractical work emerging from GeoCapabilities hasstrengthened our conviction that ‘Future 3’curriculum making has the potential to empowerstudents through its engagement with geography.Teachers should be supported to acquire agency inthe knowledge work necessary to achieve the fulleducational value of geography in education.
