Summary. Sections of the rat brain were examined with histochemical phosphatase methods. The hypothalamic magnocellular nuclei (nucleus supraopticus, nucleus paraventricular^ and accessory supraoptic nuclei) were found to possess an intense phosphatase activity in both acid and alkaline medium. Positive histochemical reactions were obtained in these cerebral nuclei and in the choroid plexus after a short treatment in the substrate, when the other constituents of the brain were still phosphatase negative. The alkaline phosphatase was apparently located mostly in the capillaries and the acid phosphatase in the nerve cell nuclei and cytoplasm. This finding is taken to support the view that intense metabolic processes take place in these magnocellular nuclei.
