The spectral function for a 3 core hole ( M 2,3 vacancy) in atomic Kr is calculated within the framework of many-body theory. The resulting position and width of the core level is in good agreement with experiment. In particular, we find that super Coster-Kronig dipole fluctuations give an additional relaxation energy shift of ∼ 3 eV, which is ∼ 30% of the shift due to monopole relaxation. We also study the variation of the M 2,3 width in free atoms as a function of atomic number Z (for the elements Ge, Br, Kr, Rb and Zr) and we discuss the influence of solid state effects.
