The authors propose a new truly three-dimensional reconstruction algorithm, which is based on the Fourier space filtering of the backprojected image, but overcomes the requirement of space invariance, which usually forces one to reject a significant fraction of the measured projections. The algorithm has been applied to the reconstruction of three-dimensional images from the list mode coincidence data recorded by a positron camera based on a pair of rotating multi-wire chambers. Results obtained with simulated data demonstrate the improvement of the reconstructed images due to a better utilisation of the available data.
