Context The COVID-19 pandemic severely disrupted tomato farming in Akumadan, Ashanti Region, Ghana, necessitating the provision of innovative technologies and robust support systems to enhance farmers' resilience to future shocks. Objective This study aims to examine the support mechanisms provided to tomato farmers in Akumadan to mitigate the effects of the pandemic and evaluate their profitability in the post-pandemic period. Methods A survey of 360 tomato farmers was conducted to gather data on the support systems received. Statistical analyses, including a perception index and regression analysis, were used to assess the impact of support mechanisms on farmers’ profitability and their overall perception of these systems. Results & discussions While production-oriented support was provided, there was a notable lack of post-harvest and marketing assistance. Factors such as years of education, cooperative membership, and access to extension services significantly influenced the level of support received. The perception index revealed a generally negative view of the post-COVID support, mainly due to perceived inequities in aid distribution. Statistical results showed that the support systems positively affected net margins, but the overall effectiveness was constrained by gaps in support areas such as post-harvest and marketing. Significance The study highlights the need for targeted interventions that align with farmers' needs and expectations, especially in addressing gaps in post-harvest and marketing support. The findings suggest that improving aid distribution frameworks and strengthening extension services will enhance the resilience, profitability, and long-term sustainability of tomato farmers, ensuring they are better prepared for future challenges.
