The Quadcomb is a new honeycomb design whose unit cell embeds slender support plates between bending ribs. This geometry simultaneously delivers bidirectional compliance with a near-zero Poisson’s ratio (∼10-2) and affords independent tailoring of out-of-plane bending stiffness and in-plane flexibility. All those capabilities are lacking in state-of-the-art zero-Poisson’s ratio architectures. The in-plane and out-of-plane elastic moduli of the new honeycomb are evaluated through analytical and finite element models and validated via experimental testing. A systematic parametric study identifies the cell-wall thickness ratio and rib angle as the key factors influencing all elastic moduli. Beyond its mechanical advantages, the plates act as bonding ledges, streamlining cell-to-cell and skin-to-core attachment during composite lay-up manufacturing. These attributes position the Quadcomb as a viable core for morphing aircraft skins, offering enhanced stiffness customization and easier integration compared to the two-dimensional zero-Poisson’s ratio honeycombs documented in the literature, against which Quadcomb’s mechanical properties were thoroughly benchmarked.
