Assesses power system security under contingencies, suggesting effective ranking methods.
With an ever-increasing demand for power in dif-ferent applications, the incorporation of various strategies for generating, transmitting and distributing power has become crucial in the current electric power system planning. In the midst of this, monitoring the security of the power system under contingencies (outage of line and generator) has also become very crucial, so that there will not be any uncertainty in the network, and there will be a continual supply of power to the load. This paper presents the security assessment of the power system under the N -1 contingency of both the line and generator unit. Contingency ranking is done to determine the severity of each contingency. In this paper, two approaches are employed for contingency ranking, using the AC power flow method and the Performance Index method. IEEE 57-bus system is employed for testing the proposed approaches using MATLAB. It has been observed that both approaches obtain nearly the same rankings, and Performance Index method is chosen to be the best method for the contingency analysis.
