Key result
Smart wearable device achieves 99% accuracy in monitoring elderly vitals and daily activities.
Why the study?
A rapidly aging population pressures healthcare operational costs and resources, creating a need for wearable device technology and IoT to support rehabilitation and elderly healthcare services.
A newly developed wearable device with integrated optical and inertial sensors achieved 99% accuracy for health monitoring and activity recognition, offering potential for stroke alerts in the elderly.
May enable remote elderly monitoring with stroke alert potential; hypothesis-generating and requires prospective validation before adoption.
The medical system comprises three primary fields: prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation. In particular, rehabilitation should always be the focus of healthcare activities, especially for the elderly. One of the global challenges facing the healthcare system is the rapid aging of the population, which creates pressure on operational costs and resources. To mitigate this pressure and provide effective healthcare services, the application of wearable device technology and the IoT offers significant potential. Therefore, a wearable device capable of monitoring oxygen saturation, heart rate based on optical sensors, as well as recognizing activities based on inertial sensors in basic daily activities (lying, sitting, standing, walking) is proposed to improve the quality of life and health of elderly individuals with reduced mobility function or during the rehabilitation process. The results showed that the developed device achieved an accuracy of $99 %$. Furthermore, based on this wearable device, an IoT platform health monitoring and stroke alert for the elderly was developed purpose of timely warning, reducing the incidence of complications and mortality caused by stroke. This system promises to enhance and improve patient health through real-time physiological measurements. Additionally, these advancements will contribute to the creation of a comprehensive health monitoring system and promote further progress in the healthcare field.
