The stoichiometric equilibrium constant, K', for the autosolvolysis reaction for the aluminum chloride-l-methyl-3-ethylimidazolium chloride ionic liquid was investigated as a function of temperature with a chloroaluminate concentra-tion cell and aluminum electrodes. The values obtained at 40 ~ 50 ~ and 60 ~ for log K ' were-16.3-+ 0.1,-16.1-+ 0.6, and-15.5-+ 0.2. The enthalpy change for the autosolvolysis reaction was found to be approximately 80 kJ- tool-I over this temperature ange. A curve fitting method for determining the initial composition of this ionic liquid during a titration is also described. Two component room temperature chloroaluminate ionic liquids (1-3) like aluminum chloride-l-(1-butyl)pyri-dinium chloride (A1CI:~-BupyC1) and aluminum chloride-1-methyl-3-ethylimidazolium chloride (A1Cl:~-MeEtimCl) de-rive much of their attraction as solvents by virtue of their adjustable Lewis acidity. The acidity Of these systems can be varied by changing the molar ratio of the two compo-nents; an acidic melt contains a molar excess of AICI:~, while a basic melt contains an excess of the organic chlo-
