This article presents the results of the first stage from a research project related to digital competences development on teachers for the indigenous contexts. In this part of the research project, an educational needs diagnosis was developed, to assess the digital competences profile in students of the bachelor’s degree in Elementary and Basic Education for Indigenous Context of the Universidad Pedagógica Nacional, Unidad 211, in Puebla, Mexico. Data was collected employing a virtual course management system accessed from internet, and solving an on-line questionnaire that included information analysis units that were related to knowledge and use of tools from information and communication technologies, the skill rate, use frequency, and the attitude towards the use of this technology on teaching. The field survey was deployed between May to August 2019. The data collected serve as input for the next stage of the research project, which will be responsible for the design of a formative program on digital competences development.
