Does venlafaxine cause orthostatic hypotension in patients treated for depression?
Venlafaxine treatment for depression is associated with a high rate of unexpected orthostatic hypotension, particularly in patients with cardiovascular comorbidities or on vasoactive medications.
May warrant BP monitoring at venlafaxine initiation; case report leaves open causality and generalizability.
We conducted a drug usage evaluation of venlafaxine for the treatment of depression. Orthostatic hypotension occurred unexpectedly in 13 of the 18 patients studied (72%) and was more severe at the initiation of treatment and when the dose was increased. All patients with a history of hypertension or ischaemic heart disease or who were taking antihypertensives or nitrate vasodilators had worsening postural variation in blood pressure during ven1afaxine treatment.

Wiese et al. (1999) conducted an observational in Depression (n=18). Venlafaxine was evaluated on Orthostatic hypotension. Venlafaxine treatment for depression was associated with unexpected orthostatic hypotension in 72% of patients, which was more severe at treatment initiation and with dose increases.
