Fetal phonocardiogram was investigated as a less expensive method to obtain a fetal heart rate variability graph similar to standard cardiotocography for monitoring risky pregnancies.
Why the study?
Fetal phonocardiography is safe and accessible but seldom used due to low signal-to-noise ratio, while standard cardiotocography and ultrasound are costly and cumbersome.
Can fetal phonocardiogram be used to estimate a cardiotocogram for monitoring fetal heart rate variability?
Can fetal phonocardiogram be used to estimate a cardiotocogram for monitoring fetal heart rate variability?
Fetal phonocardiogram may offer a less expensive alternative to cardiotocography for continuous monitoring of fetal heart rate variability in risky pregnancies.
May support affordable fetal monitoring alternatives; hypothesis-generating and requires prospective validation before clinical adoption.
Fetal phonocardiogram, or the electronic recording of fetal heart sounds, is a safe and easily available signal indicating fetal well-being. However, due to its low signal-tonoise ratio and poor reliability, it is seldom used to monitor the health of the fetus. Instead alternatives like cardiotocogrpaphy (CTG) and ultrasonographic examinations are the standard of care, which are costly and cumbersome to perform. In the present study, an attempt is made to obtain a fetal heart rate variability graph similar to cardiotocograph. This graph can be used to observe clinically important parameters like average fHR variability, accelerations, and decelerations. Presence of acceleration or decelaration gives an important clue on fetal health and can be used for continuous monitoring of fetal in risky pregnancy in a less expensive way.

Bs et al. (2022) studied Fetal monitoring in risky pregnancy. Fetal phonocardiogram vs. Cardiotocography (CTG) and ultrasonographic examinations was evaluated on Fetal heart rate variability graph similar to cardiotocograph.
