Transient kinetic studies of the magnesium ion-dependent ATPase of heavy meromyosin have been described using the chromophoric analog of ATP, 6-mercapto-9-β-ribofuranosylpurine 5′- triphosphate (thioATP) (Trentham et al., 1972). We report here an extension of these studies using subfragment 1 and heavy meromyosin and a wider range of chromophoric ATP analogs modified both in the adenine and triphosphate moieties.
