Sinusoidal phase modulation is a simple technique for increasing the SBS threshold by an enhancement factor (EF) of 3 to 10 in fiber-based laser systems. However, this EF can be reduced by a factor of ∼2 if modulation settings are not carefully chosen. In those cases, SBS is seeded by either another fiber SBS signal or a back-reflection signal. We have developed a spatio-temporal model designed to estimate the SBS threshold enhancement in multi-fiber systems. Our simulation results confirm experimental findings and help the design of fiber lasers that mitigate SBS through spectrum engineering approaches.
