This paper describes the application of an SCR-based static switch, located at the point of common coupling (PCC), in a designed microgrid, which incorporates a high level system control scheme to maintain compliance with IEEE Standard 1547. In this application distributed resource equipment, which may be considered non-compliant, has been uniquely applied beyond the static switch to increase reliability, power quality, plus provide back up and universal power supply capability to customer load. The static switch functions as a power gateway between the utility and customer load, providing a dual role of protection of the customer from the utility and vice- versa. In addition general utility expectations, system design, operation and testing criteria are discussed.
