Demonstrates improved accuracy in deformation calculations for geosynthetic-encased granular columns, suggesting better foundation design strategies.
A simplified semi-analytical solution is derived in this paper to calculate the deformations of Geosynthetic-Encased Granular Columns (GEGCs) under vertical load. The skin friction distribution between the GEGCs and surrounding soil are modelled by modified models and a modified hyperbolic p-y curve model is proposed to calculate the radial mechanical behaviour. Based on the differential deformation between column and soil, the neutral point position and column-soil stress ratio are calculated in this method. The accuracy of the proposed method is validated through comprehensive comparisons with existing experimental data, theoretical calculation results and numerical simulation results. These comparisons demonstrate that the proposed method exhibits superior accuracy, particularly in predicting the maximum bulging deformation and its location. Parametric studies on the deformation behaviours of the GEGCs are conducted using the proposed semi-analytical method, including the column spacing, stiffness of the geosynthetic encasement, internal friction angle of the granular material and the column-soil stiffness ratio. The findings can be used for the design and calculation of the GEGCs composite foundation.
