Experimental study demonstrates acoustoelastic effects on bending stresses in steel, suggesting a new monitoring method.
This paper presents the results of an experimental study of acoustoelasticity occuring during the propagation of ultrasonic Rayleigh surface waves in a field of static bending stresses. For a St. 20 steel sample, it is shown that the acoustoelastic effect differs under compression and tension. A calibration curve is constructed for Rayleigh surface waves, enabling their use of to monitor bending stresses, which is impossible with volumetric probing.
