Editorial highlights advances in fracture and fault research for hydrocarbon engineering applications, suggesting future directions.
Multi-scale fractures and fault systems in tight reservoirs are key controls on hydrocarbon accumulation and migration. They also provide the geological basis for effective hydraulic fracturing. The seven papers in this collection address cutting-edge topics. These include high-precision fracture and fault characterization, geomechanical response mechanisms, and natural–hydraulic fracture coupling. The studies employ multi-scale methods, from 3D reconstruction of micron-scale fractures to stress perturbation modeling of regional faults. Together, they highlight the need for multidisciplinary integration in multi-scale fracture and fault research. This editorial summarizes recent advances in the field and outlines future directions.
