Presents variability in phonographemics and semantics of Earlier Egyptian mortuary texts, indicating linguistic changes over time.
Summary In this paper, two variability processes are presented in phonographemics, and semantics, with possible relevance for the linguistic diachrony of the Earlier Egyptian mortuary texts: the Pyramid Texts and Coffin Texts. Data and tentative interpretation are provided on the various spellings of the theonym Hapy and the related term bʿḥ ‘inundation’, and the alternative markers ỉn / ḫr for specific agents in passive structures.
